The World Surf League Qualifying Series Essential Costa Rica Open Pro came to an end today after 5 days of competition and a lot of good waves, excitement and even crocodiles.

Costa Rica’s Noe Mar McGonagle got to the semi-final but was unable to qualify to the final, after getting a score of 6.87 for his last wave when he needed a 7.01. Noe Mar competed against a very tough opponent, Ethan Ewing from Australia, who got scores of 9.00 and 5.83 against McGonagle’s 7.83 and 6.87. The Costa Rican athlete was visibly upset with the result which he felt was unfair, many fans showed their support to McGonagle in social media stating that he deserved the pass to the final. Noe Mar said to local news channel Teletica: “I’m not speaking to media about this, I don’t gain anything by complaining or talking so it stays here in the internet“. Noe Mar earned 1080 points and $4500 USD for his third position.

The male final was disputed between Ewing and Hawaiian native Olamana Eleogram . Ethan Ewing took the win with a wave scored 9.27 and another 7.50 against Eleogram’s 7.50 and 7.40 Ewing is the sub champion of the Vans US Open 2016, was ranked number 7 in the WSL QS and 16500 points coming into this competition, and today he earned his pass to the World Championship Tour along with 3000 points and cash prize.

Silvana Lima from Brasil and Pauline Ado from France faced off in the female final, that ended with the Brasilian taking the win with two waves of 8.57 and 8.83 against a 6.93 and 7.33 from Ado. A very important win for Lima, who is the sub champion of the ASP World Tour 2008 and 2009; she came into this competition with 12800 points and a number 6 ranking in the WSL QS. She is pretty much securing a slot in the Championship Tour 2017 (CT 2017), with this first place she is taking 3000 points, and $12,000.00 USD
