The expansion of the bridge over the Virilla River which connects Belen in Heredia, with Lindora in Santa Ana will finally conclude early August, confirmed President Carlos Alvarado and the Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Rodolfo Mendez Mata, during an inspection done this Wednesday.

This bridge is being expanded from two to four lanes and it’s the first step in the expansion of this route, commonly known as the “Radial Santa Ana -Belen” and through which is used by approximately 40 thousand vehicles every day.

President Alvarado took on the commitment of complimenting this work with the expansion of the road through more than two kilometers. Minister Mendez announced that the design of this project will be approved in September this year and they are already working in a tender for the hiring of the construction which should be awarded in the first semester of 2019. The projection is to have the works concluded by the second semester of 2020.

“In addition, we have the plan to widen the stretch between the Virilla Bridge and the Panasonic in a term of no more than two years”, stated Minister Mendez.

“Planning was vita, from the design stage in which we defined a typology that would allow the reduction of costs and the least affectation possible to the environment, as well as the coordination with all the institutions to avoid delays or extra charges”, said Alejandro Rossi, Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The cost of this construction is of $8.5 million which were financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). Both, the expansion of the bridge and the Radial, are projects of the National Roads Authority (CONAVI) managed by the UNOPS.
