An organization of motorcycle riders and street racing enthusiasts are petitioning the government for what they think is their right to burn rubber on the public roadways of Costa Rica. President Laura Chinchilla was flabbergasted at the idea and posted a scathing Facebook update calling the riders a bunch of snotty-nosed kids.

Over the last few days, leaders of the National Citizens Committee of Motorcycle Riders have called on their members to join an iron horse rally in San Jose to deliver a formal petition to the Vice Minister of Transportation. According to Karla Barquero of online news daily CRHoy.com, the riders have put together a proposal to alleviate the growing problem of street racing in Costa Rica.

Essentially, the committee wants to have exclusive access to a section of unused highway located behind the Eastern Park so that they can organize illegal quarter-mile drag races. If this is not possible, the group would like the government to assist them in looking for a property where they can hold their races.

Street racers in Costa Rica are called “picones.” Since last year, President Chinchilla has called on her Transportation and Security Ministers to crack down on illegal drag races. The Costa Rica Star has reported on these efforts over the last few months; on one occasion a group of street racers bragged about having an informant planted inside the Transit Police who alerted them of law enforcement checkpoints and monitoring. Weeks later, police retaliated with one of their own officers going undercover and infiltrating a street racing crew.

President Chinchilla’s Facebook update was several paragraphs long. She reminded her constituents that a crackdown on underground racing circuits that use public roadways has been one of her priorities since last year. More than 70 vehicles allegedly involved in street racing, most of them motorcycles, have been impounded by law enforcement officials thus far in 2014.
