Madrid/London, November 6th, 2013 – FCC, the Citizens Services Group, has been chosen to reform the Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela, 18 kilometers from San José (Costa Rica). FCC will construct a hangar at the country’s main aeronautical facility worth 25 million euros, with a completion period of eighteen months.

The Alajuela facilities serve airlines flying to the entire American continent (from North to South) and their European connections. The Costa Rican airport is one of the fastest growing in the region, both in number of passengers with nearly five million passengers per year, as well as in the number of carriers used and cargo volume.

The project, with a total area of ​​21,894 meters squared, consists of a main building (the hangar) and a number of ancillary buildings such as those used for workshops, one for general use and a building for storing flammable liquids and materials, plus a car park with 150 spaces.

The hangar will be built 150 meters from the runway and will have capacity of six aircrafts, using a Boeing 757-300 as a reference aircraft. The building design prioritizes operability and adaptability across the distribution of space, through a compact solution that occupies little ground.

The facades and the roof will be similar appearance and ancillary buildings will have a appearance to the hangar. In the course of the project special attention has been paid to the collection and disposal of rain.

This construction work on Costa Rica’s main airport are included within the National Transport Plan prepared by the Ministry of Public Works, with a planned investment of 36.5 billion euro in road, rail, airport and aircraft over the next 25 years, and which most of the contracts are by tender.

FCC: A strong presence in Latin America

Latin America now accounts for 11.5% of FCC revenues (1H13 figures). Other important projects currently under way in the region include the construction of Line 1 of the Panama Metro, a hospital complex in Panama City, a new access channel from the Pacific to the Panama Canal.

In Costa Rica, the company is expanding the Cañas-Liberia national highway in Guanacaste and holds the concession (through Globalvía) to operate the San José-Caldera toll road. At the end of 2012, FCC obtained a contract to build the control tower at Colombia’s El Dorado airport, which ranks first in Latin America in terms of cargo volume and third in passenger traffic.
