Academy Award® Winner Marcia Gay Harden (Fifty Shades of Grey, Pollock) stars as Jane, a bookish introvert, who loses her job as a librarian and spirals downward into depression. The library and all of its books gave her life meaning. Jane contemplates suicide and decides to see something beautiful before she dies, traveling to tropical, picturesque Costa Rica. Once there she meets a younger man named Juan (Óscar Jaenada, Cantinflas), a charming, charismatic tour guide who makes his living off the many single female tourists who come to town. Together, they embark on an adventure into the heart of Costa Rica. The awkward pair experience a transformational journey where Juan reads his first book and Jane comes to appreciate what “Pura Vida” (“Pure Life”) has to offer in a way that may change her plans to “end it all” in paradise.
AFTER WORDS was directed and produced by Juan Feldman and written by Joel Silverman. Additional cast includes Ron Canada, Jackie Torres, Sonni Paisley and Yvette Thor.
As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, production of this film got started in the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in July 2012, and it features quite a few ecological wonders of our country. The first working title of this movie was “The Librarian.”
The North American distribution rights of this film were acquired earlier this year during the Cannes Film Festival. One of the themes explored in AFTER WORDS is the allure of Costa Rica as a destination for women who enjoy solo travel.
