The Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) informed that foreigners who lose their Costa Rican identification document no longer have to file the report with OIJ in order to get a new one issued, instead, they only need to make the request in the Migration offices.

Up until recently any foreigner who lost their Costa Rican ID first had to file a report with OIJ, sign a sworn statement with a notary and then go to Migration to request another document issued, the same process that applies for documents that have been stolen.

Now, all they have to do is show up to Migration offices in La Uruca and make the request for a new one.

Authorities explained that the number of reports filed in OIJ for lost document was very high. They still recommend that those that get their personal documents stolen should file the report to OIJ, “If they are victims of a crime it is important that they file the report”.

The process to get an ID replaced has no cost.
