Costa Rica’s former Minister of Treasury and former candidate to the Vice-Presidency in this last campaign, Edgar Ayales, passed away this Wedneday, April 25, 2018.

Ayales was a respected economist who served as Minister of Treasury for two years (2012-2014); during the presidency of Laura Chinchilla, he was also the candidate to the vice-presidency in this past elections alongside presidential candidate for the National Liberation Party (PLN), Antonio Alvarez Desanti.

According to Farid Ayales, brother of Edgar Ayales, the later was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia since last year.

After Alvarez Desanti was left out in the first round of elections, Ayales agreed to collaborate with candidate of the National Restoration Party, Fabricio Alvarado, as part of his team of economic consultants.

During his term as Minister of Treasury, Ayales was emphatic about the importance of pushing a fiscal reform. The current Law to Strengthen the Public Finances which is in process of being approved in the Legislative Assembly was created with base on a document that was sent by Ayales to Congress before finishing his position in May 2014.

Edgar Ayales graduated from the University of Costa Rica and got his Master’s degree in Kent University.

The wake will be held this Thursday since 9 a.m. at the Montesacro funeral home in San Pedro, his funeral will take place at 3 p.m. in the Curridabat church.
