Paola Mora Tumminelli, former president of state bank Banco de Costa Rica (BCR), who has remained in custody since Friday as part of the continuing investigation of the “Cementazo” corruption case, was set free this Saturday by the Criminal Court of San Jose but has been stripped of her passport in order to avoid leaving the country.

Mora’s properties were raided last Friday by the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) and the District Attorney, in search for documents or information related to the corruption case. Mora’s passport was seized and she must sign every 15 days. She is forbidden to have any contact with witnesses in this case and these preventive measures will be valid for the next six months.

The former president of the banking institution is being investigated for embezzlement and two charges of influence peddling, one in relation to the Cementazo case and another in connection to an association related to the University of Costa Rica’s soccer team which could have received benefits from Mora.

Earlier this month Mario Barrenechea, former General Manager of Banco de Costa Rica received the approval of house arrest after being in preventive imprisonment since November 6, 2017. Barrenechea is accused of embezzlement regarding a credit/loan granted for $30 million USD to the company of Juan Carlos Bolaños.

Juan Carlos Bolaños, the main actor in the Cementazo case is still in prison and the court actually extended his preventive custody measure through November 4, 2018. Bolaños is facing charges of embezzlement, influence peddling, criminal simulation and false accusation.
