For the purpose of meeting the demands of the modern workplace in Guanacaste, the National Learning Institute (Spanish initials: INA) will offer a free, comprehensive business English course in Filadelfia from March 21st, 2014 to January 15th, 2015. Prospective students must be at least 15 years old and have completed the 9th grade of general education in Costa Rica.
This ten-month foreign language acquisition course will focus on teaching English at a level typically utilized in the service, tourism and hospitality industries. The focus is on listening comprehension and conversation, although some course modules focus on reading and writing. A typical INA business English language curriculum in Costa Rica lasts approximately 900 hours, and the course load includes the following:
- Introduction to English
- Pronunciation I & II
- Reading Techniques
- Intermediate Learning
- Reading Comprehension
- Basic Writing Skills
- Intermediate Learning II
- Advanced Skills
Young agricultural workers who have been displaced by the ongoing real estate and tourism development in Guanacaste are encouraged to apply for this and any other INA training courses. The two presidential candidates in Costa Rica who are headed to a runoff election have promised some level of employment relief for Guanacaste in the way of Free Trade Zones and incentives for foreign companies to enter the region; however, implementation of such measures may take some time.
Prospective students must have a national, foreign resident, refugee, or asylum cedula in order to register for this business English course. Orientation for the course will take place at the Sexton (Parochial) Hall of Filadelfia on February 7th, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Those interested will be subject to a language learning aptitude test as requirement for admission.
As with other INA technical and vocational programs of study, this business English course requires an earnest commitment from students. Classes will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
