A moderate earthquake struck central Costa Rica at 11:59 a.m. on Friday, producing light to moderate shaking in many areas of the country’s Central Valley as well as the southern Pacific canton of Perez Zeledon.

 

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI), the earthquake measured 4.5 magnitude with its epicenter in Santa Maria de Dota and a shallow depth of about 10 miles.

 

Light shaking was felt in several areas of the San Jose metro area as well as the central Pacific coast, while stronger shaking was reported in San Isidro de El General (Perez Zeledon).

 

OVSICORI said that the temblor was caused by a local fault at the epicenter.

 

There were no reports of injury or damage.
