Since 2014, a total of 34 surfers have received scholarships from the Costa Rica Sports and Recreation Institute (ICODER) and the National Olympic Committee and with the help and request of the Surf Federation a totaling over 144 million colones (approximately US $250,560.00).

The athletes are picked by the organization as eligible to receive a scholarship in 2018. The following athletes completed and turned in their documentation on time are: Leilani McGonagle, Noe Mar McGonagle, Leonardo Calvo, Jason Torres and Valeria Salustri (SUP).

Leilani McGonagle being the best athlete for Costa Rica in ISA world cups, received the first Olympic scholarship, which could be extended through 2020.

Carlos Muñoz and Noe Mar McGonagle, the best two in the WQS 2017 also received important funds during their participation the Hawaii Triple Crown 2017 where they secured their places for the WQS 10000 to take place this 2018.

“This has been teamwork. It is an important effort for the Surf Federation to process these scholarships, but thanks to the success that the Costa Ricans have obtained we have been able to maintain direct scholarships for surfers for five consecutive years”, said Randall Chaves, President of the Surf Federation.

The National Surfing Team was also recognized for their excellent performance during the Central American Sporting Games that took place in Managua, Nicaragua.
