The Metropolitan Police, or Met, is on heightened alert following reports of xenophobic incidents after the Brexit victory in the referendum on the European Union, reported the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

The mayor has asked the Met to be “extra vigilant” after the Polish embassy in the United Kingdom expressed its shock at xenophobia against the Polish community in this country.

The police are investigating allegations concerning a Polish cultural building in Hammersmith in west London, which was painted with offensive graffiti towards the Poles.

Cambridgeshire police are investigating notes allegedly posted through letterboxes of Polish residents in the county.

“I take seriously my responsibility to defend London’s fantastic mix of diversity and tolerance. So it’s really important we stand guard against any rise in hate crimes or abuse by those who might use last week’s referendum as cover to seek to divide us,” said Khan. EFE
