At least 50 people were injured, many of them seriously, Friday morning in the Pavas suburb of Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose when two commuter trains slammed into each other in a violent head-on collision.

 

At least 50 passengers were sent to area hospitals and trauma centers, according to the Red Cross, many suffering from broken bones and head trauma.

 

Meanwhile, at least six passengers remained trapped in the wreckage, according to reports.

 

The president of Costa Rica’s metro train system known as INCOFER, Guillermo Santana said in a brief press statement after the crash that the accident appears to be due to human error, and that an investigation is underway.
