The Center of Investigation for Biotechnology (CIB) of the Costa Rica Technological Institute works in the elaboration of a syrup with the use of a plant that grows in the North Zone of Costa Rica which will help save the life of poisoned dogs.

The syrup is intended to provoke the vomit in a poisoned animal and diminish the effects of the toxic substance.

At this time the group of investigators is also in the process of registering the patent for the formula, and for this reason they cannot reveal details on the formula or the plant being used, although the investigators commented that its an plant endemic to Costa Rica and commonly exported to Asia.

Investigators initially thought just the stem had the component needed for the formula to make effect but after further research they discovered the whole plant can be used in the elaboration of the syrup with a satisfactory result.

The syrup does not ¨cure¨ the animal, but it helps stabilize it enough to buy time to reach a veterinary clinic to get professional help.

¨The syrup has a high concentration of sugar which makes it appealing for dogs. It is in liquid form which makes it easy to administer¨, explained Catalina Rosales, one of the investigators in charge.

The syrup will induce vomit immediately and just one time, not constantly to avoid dehydration.

The product is still not available for purchase since its undergoing the testing stage in a larger sample of animals which involves administering the syrup to confirm the effect of inducing the vomit immediately and once.

Animal poisoning is a common accident which pet owners face and can cause different effects in the animals including death if action is not taken promptly.
