A Japanese man, arrested last weekend for allegedly stabbing his 12-year-old son to death, told the police he did it because the child was not studying for his secondary level exams, the police said Tuesday.

 

The accused, Kengo Satake, 48, a transporter from Nagoya city was taken for interrogation after his arrest, a police spokesperson told local media.

 

The man was arrested about an hour after stabbing his son Ryota in the chest with a kitchen knife Sunday.

 

The child subsequently died after losing a massive amount of blood, said the police.

 

The man told the police he was concerned as his son was not studying for his annual exams whose results are a prerequisite for acceptance in prestigious public or private schools.

 

Satake said he wanted his son to attend the same private secondary school he attended as a child in Nagoya.

 

In Japan, families are known to exert undue pressure on children for achieving top academic results. EFE
