The sons of Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman, the drug cartel boss recently captured by Mexican marines after a fierce firefight, may have met with a businessman in northern Costa Rica to discuss an operational expansion plan. Such was the matter discussed at the Legislative Assembly earlier today during a special session called after an intelligence report was leaked to the press.

According to a news report filed by Febe Cruz Brenes of national radio station Monumental, legislators called on Mariano Figueres, Director of National Security and Intelligence (Spanish initials: DIS) to testify on this issue. Director Figueres was visibly embarrassed about the report, which was classified and should not have leaked to news media outlets.

The legislators were not too worried about the leaked report; they were more concerned about the fact that the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) were clueless about the presence of Chapo’s family in Costa Rica. The above-mentioned meeting allegedly took place in 2012, and until the report was leaked yesterday, the DIS had not alerted the OIJ, which is the entity in charge of matters related to drug trafficking.

For Director Figueres, a close friend of President Luis Guillermo Solis, this is the latest in a series of embarrassments over the last two years. As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, Director Figueres has been taken to task with regard to his outlandish comments about the possible presence of ISIS operatives in our country. He has also been spotted meeting with a man he called “a potential informant” at a bar in San Jose; Director Figueres was with his domestic partner at the time, who happens to be a Vice Minister.

Before being dismissed by legislators, Director Figueres told the plenary that just because the DIS report was leaked does not mean the meeting actually took place; to which legislator Antonio Alvarez Desanti of the National Liberation Party responded: “Now that we have the report and your testimony, we will make that determination. Thank you.”
