Anthony Fillingim took the male open competition while Leilani McGonagle was the winner in the female open in the fourth date of the “Kölbi” National Surf Tournament that took place in Playa Guiones, Nosara, Guanacaste.

Fillingim, was in the fourth position when he reached the final and needed an 8.83 to take the first place, he caught the perfect wave at the right time and scored a 9.17 with only 10 seconds left on the clock; he added 16.84 points taking the first position from Jair Pérez who scored 16.24. With this result, Fillingim, Pérez and Jason Torres become the favorites to take the national title with only two dates left of competition.

Leilani McGonagle who had missed the previous dates of the tournament due to her participation in international tournaments, was the best in the female category, beating Zulay Martínez, Valentina Resano and Rubiana Brownell; although McGonagle took the victory this Sunday, she holds a low position in the ranking because of her absence in previous dates.

The fifth date of the “Kölbi” National Surf Tournament will be in Playa Jacó, for the Arenas Skate and Surf Cup, June 24th and 25th.

Costa Rica’s National Surfing Team will be leaving to France this week to represent the country at the ISA World Surfing Games that take place May 20-28. The team is formed by: Jason Torres (Jacó), Jair Pérez (Jacó), Leonardo Calvo (Puntarenas) and Anthoy Fillingim (Santa Teresa); the female representatives are Leilani McGonagle (Pavones) and Emily Gussoni (Jacó) and their coach is Jim Hogan.
