On June 23rd the Live Your Goals campaign kicked off an initiative for the girls of Costa Rica. The program gathered more than 150 young women who want to pursue their dreams of playing soccer.
Out on the grounds of the Estadio Nacional, government officials and Costa Rica Woman’s National Team members Raquel Rodriguez and team captain Shirley Cruz, as well as other well-known names in Costa Rican soccer, took part in the event to inspire the possible future of the Woman’s National Team Players. Not only was this the start of their campaign in Costa Rica, but it is also the start of preparations for the FIFA U17 Woman’s World Cup 2014.
“I have to be honest and say that when I was a girl starting out, I’d loved to have had the kind of opportunities available to Costa Rican girls today. Being able to count on the necessary infrastructure and resources to grow up with a good grasp of the basics of the women’s game is vitally important,” Shirley Cruz told the people in attendance.
The June 23rd inauguration is the beginning of 16 Live Your Goals events for young women in Costa Rica. Each event is expected to have around 200 girls from the ages 6 through 12 in attendance. The program outlines that because of newer organizational skills and infrastructure; dreams can come true with hard work and motivation.
“The success of the FIFA Com-Unity Seminar is reflected today in this festival and the participation of so many girls. The program is an opportunity for parents to support their children in the practice of football and to give them the chance to get ahead through the game. An example of all this is Shirley Cruz, who has had to make enormous efforts to get to where she is today,” said the FIFA official.
“Every Costa Rican girl is invited to be part of the campaign and participate in the festivals.” The dates for the Costa Rica Live Your Goals festivals are:
San Jose June 23rd, Guanacaste July 21st, Cartago August 4th, Limón August 25th, Alejuela Dececmber 2nd, Heredia March 2nd 2013, San Jose June 8th 2013.
