The Magaly Movie Theater in Costa Rica is now operating both its screening rooms with clean energy, thanks to the installation of solar panels that will eventually allow it run completely with solar energy and stop using electricity.

This makes Costa Rica the third country in Latin America – after Brazil and Argentina – to adopt clean energy use in the movie theaters.

The official announcement was done this Thursday, October 26 with the premiere of the movie “An Inconvenient Truth 2”, which goes through scientific analysis that explains the causes of climate change and the consequences that are already being experienced in many parts of the world, including Costa Rica. Costa Rican Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is featured in the film.

The investment in this project was of close to US $70,000.00 and the company Panasonic was in charge of the installation of the 180 solar panels of 320 watts each.

“Not only do we manufacture the solar module, but we also provide a comprehensive solution in terms of design, installation and system guarantee”, explained William Campos from Panasonic’s Energy Solutions Department.

“The use of solar energy is something that our visitors appreciate, since in every level people are more conscious about the meaning of climate change and our new responsibilities as a company or a person. We have established a new standard for the most conscious and demanding audience, we are setting a precedent in Latin America”, affirmed Luis Carcheri, General Manager of Distribuidora Romaly.

The installation of the panels so far allow the Magaly Theater to generate more than 90% of its energy consumption, feeding the screens, projectors, air conditioning system, audio system, and general illumination in both screening room, by November 1st it should run completely on solar energy.

Costa Rica is one of the countries in Central America that receives more solar light, therefore, it has a great potential to generate electricity through the use of solar panels
