Lima, Nov 24 (EFE).– An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on Tuesday struck the mutual border area between Peru, Brazil and Bolivia but there have been no reports as yet of any injuries or material damage.

The powerful quake occurred at 5:44 p.m. and had its epicenter in the Madre de Dios Amazon region, 83 km (51 mi.) south of the town of Esperanza some 90 km (560 mi.) east of Lima, according to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute, or IGP.

The temblor was located 350 km (217 mi.) below the surface of the Earth and was also felt in other parts of southern Peru such as Cuzco, Arequipa and Tacna, the latter province bordering on Chile.

The coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Center told Radio Programas del Peru that three aftershocks were felt from the quake, which has not yet been reported by the IGP.

The quake caused alarm in Lima and the main cities in southern Peru, whose residents fled out into the streets, according to witnesses and local media.

The National Civil Defense Institute is determining whether any significant damage was caused by the quake. EFE
