A 25-year-old Mexican woman was murdered the morning of this Sunday, August 5th in Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa de Cobano, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

According to information given to Rodrigo Alfaro, regional sub-director of the Public Police Force by another woman native of England, her and her friend were sitting at the beach around 4:30 a.m. when they were intercepted by two men with the apparent intention of robbing them.

After a short struggle the English woman was able to escape her attacker and ran for help to the hotel where they were staying; personnel from the hotel and other people immediately went in search of the Mexican woman and the suspects.

The body of the victim identified as Maria Trinidad Mathus Tenorio was found at around 6:10 a.m. in the beach, apparently her attackers dragged her to the water and drowned her.

The Police arrested one of the suspects close to 6:40 a.m. when members of the community had managed to corner him and had taken justice in their hands, they beat him up and left him naked and badly hurt; the second suspect was detained in Cobano at round 9:30 a.m. after the police received a confidential call of the whereabouts of the suspect, both men were identified by the surviving victim.

The case is under investigation by the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ).
