The local TV station WBTV, citing sources close to the family, identified the man as Justin Carr, a 26-year-old black man who was in critical condition since Wednesday.

Carr was shot in the head around 20.30 local time in downtown Charlotte, a place where riots between protesters and police broke out as a result of the death of African American Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday who was shot by an officer of the local police.

On Wednesday night, The City of Charlotte said on its Twitter account that the shooting that killed Carr was “civilian on civilian” and “Police did not fire shot.”

Authorities have not yet identified any suspects responsible for the shooting, although photos published by local media show that some protesters were armed.

The mayor of Charlotte, Jennifer Roberts, on Thursday declared a curfew from midnight local time (04.00 GMT) before the third night of protests in the town over the death Tuesday of African American Keith Lamont Scott.

Roberts said the curfew will be in effect until further notice from midnight until six in the morning, local media reported.

After two nights of rioting, the governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory, declared a state of emergency and deployed National Guard troops.

The protests broke out on Tuesday after Scott, 43, was shot dead by a policeman in the parking lot of an apartment.

Police accused Scott of being armed and “posed an imminent deadly threat” to the officers, a charge that his relatives and witnesses reject. EFE
