The Minister of Labor, Steven Nuñez, resigned this Friday Sept 27th after the traffic officer that escorted him to Limon died in a car accident in the early hours of that same day.

Nuñez apparently requested the escort last minute since he was running behind to attend a meeting in the province of Limon, since traffic is regulated in a segment of Route 32, the Minister made the request for a traffic police escort; apparently he did not follow proper procedure.

“Today, due to very unfortunate circumstances, when I was on my way to the province of Limon to attend an activity related to my position, Traffic officer Juan Carlos Mora, died when he was offering his collaboration to help me arrive on time to the event”, reads the letter presented by Nuñez.

“This situation, which I regret deeply, forces me to step aside from the Government that you direct, with the purpose that my situation does not affect the political project that has been established by the administration Alvarado Quesada”, continued the now former Minister who concluded offering his condolences to the family of the officer.

Presidency said they will investigate the request made by Nuñez and the justification presented.

The accident took place at 10:12 a.m. two kilometers before the Rio Sucio bridge, versions provided state that Mora’s motorcycle skid, he lost control of the same and crashed. Mora died instantly as a result of the impact.

Mora had 19 years working as a traffic police officer.
