The last Sunday of each month, starting at 11 a.m., the National Museum in downtown San José fills with music that captivates crowds of up to 300 people.

This is the 10th year that the San José Concert Band will offer concerts on the last Sunday of each month. Seating is limited, and you must arrive early to reserve a seat. Locals enter free (with id) and foreign visitors must pay the museum admission to see the concert.

The wind band, a versatile, skilled group, aims to expose concert-goers to a variety of music from both international as well as Costa Rican composers, said the Museum.

The genres interpreted range from extremely complex symphonic music to folk, traditional and popular tunes.

The open-air concerts allow for a more intimate performance environment, and last about an hour.

The concert season kicks off on Sunday, March 26 with a program dedicated to the saxophone. April’s concert is dedicated to the European Union. And so on, different themes will be offered throughout the year. A full program is available at the Museum’s website.
