This past weekend, a drug interdiction operation carried out by security forces in Nicaragua ended up with a shootout, a suicide, and several arrests, which include the detention of a lingerie model from Costa Rica. According to a news report filed by entertainment reporter Ariel Chaves Gonzalez of daily tabloid Diario Extra, the lingerie model has been identified as Adriana Corella from Alajuela.
Online news website el19digital.com of Nicaragua reports that National Police conducted an investigation into a drug smuggling crew that included members from Costa Rica residing in Managua. The crew is known as El Cacique (The Tribe Chief), and it ostensibly included Miss Corella and her husband, who has been identified as Walter Mauricio Pereira Castillo.
It is important to note that el19digital.com is an online publication operated by the Nicaraguan government. The report published by that entity indicates that the National Police intercepted a shipment of more than 200 kilograms of cocaine, which was being transported to the northern region of the country. The incident unfolded on the highway connecting Leon with Managua, and the cocaine was allegedly concealed in two vehicles along with more than $800K in cash. A roadside shootout is alleged to have taken place before several individuals were arrested.
Mr. Pereira purportedly fled the scene in a Toyota Yaris. Police chased him down to an upscale condominium outside of Managua, which he allegedly rented with Miss Corella for $2,000 per month. It was in the parking lot of that condominium where the National Police claims Mr. Pereira ended his life with a single gunshot to the neck. It is not clear how Miss Corella was taken into custody, although Diario Extra reports that she witnessed her husband’s suicide.
Four members of El Cacique are alleged to be from Costa Rica; two are reportedly from Guatemala and three from Nicaragua, including two women. In Costa Rica, Mr. Pereira owned and operated a few auto service centers in San Jose. He had moved to Nicaragua about a month ago along with Miss Corella, who was actively involved in music video production earlier this year.
