According to data by the Costa Rican Red Cross, the number of violent deaths increased by 68 this year, closing with 1,428 total deaths for 2018.

Violent deaths include traffic accidents, water accidents, fires etc. In total, the Red Cross handled 382,000 emergencies in 2018, averaging 1,046 a day.

Water accidents took the lives of 149 people this year, 33 more than in 2017. When it comes to traffic accidents there were a total of 445 killed, the majority of the traffic accidents were registered in the province of Alajuela followed by San José; once again, motorcycle drivers represented the majority of the victims with 159 (through November). 95% of the victims of traffic accidents are males and speeding continues to be the main cause of road accidents.

There was also an increase in the number of people killed by fires, a total of 30 in 2018.

Data includes all victims that lost their life at the site of the accidents, there is no information on those victims that passed away after being transferred to a hospital.

The total number of homicides did go down, in total there were 585 homicides for 2018 which is 18 less than in 2017.
