Former siamese twin Ezequiel Nuñez was able to leave the Intensive Care Unit at the National Children’s Hospital in Costa Rica and was moved to an isolated room where he is able to be with his parents 24/7. Unfortunately, his brother Samuel still remains in the ICU since he continues to depend on a ventilator.

“Ezequiel is not in an isolation room that has been made available for him to make him more comfortable, he will be able to have the company of his parents all the time. The room has less light, noise and sleep interruptions”, said Olga Arguedas, director of the National Children’s Hospital who also explained that they were able to make this move since he no longer required critical care, was breathing on his own, feeding on his own and his hemodynamic function (dynamics of blood flow) is good.

The medical center also included another hospital bed in this room for when his brother is ready to leave the ICU.
Ezequiel and Samuel were conjoined by the top of their heads, didn’t share brain or cerebellum but did share veins, arteries and corpus callosum (the part of the mind that allows communication between the two hemispheres of the brain).

The characteristics of the procedure made this one of the most complex surgeries done in the National Children’s Hospital and required the assistance of 20 specialists and over 18 hours of work.
