The National Seismologic Network (RSN) and the Observatory of Volcanic and Seismic Activity in Costa Rica (OVSICORI) have released reports on recent eruptions and other volcanic activity at the Poas and Rincon de la Vieja colossi over the last few days.

The reports indicate that the activity in both volcanoes has been phreatic, meaning that it is related to underground water eruptions, not lava. Both volcanoes have issued warnings to visitors, but no evacuations have been ordered. Scientists have traveled to the craters to collect water and sulfur samples -and to take great pictures as well.

The Turrialba volcano has also been active with phreatic eruptions since March.

The Poas Volcano

This is the report from the RSN on the Poas:

The volcano is currently undergoing intense phreatic activity. On the night of April 13^th, an eruption went up 300 meters into the air, which caused volcanic material to eject from Laguna Caliente into the southern shoals and the inner crater to the east. Scientists from RSN have recommended close monitoring of the Poas

The Rincon de la Vieja Volcano

This is the report from the OVSICORI on the Rincon de la Vieja:

On April 14^th at 2:00, the lake in the volcano experienced a phreatic eruption. Neighbors witnessed the eruption and reported hearing loud booming sounds coming from the inner crater. No magma was expelled, but significant amounts of sediments came out of the lake and were deposited on the outer walls and canals facing notrh. A large mushroom cloud of steam was seen and photographed after 2:00 pm by neighbors.

The OVSICORI recorded an earthquake at the same time of the eruption, but no intensity reports were collected.

These reports come after warnings issued by the Council on National Emergencies to people who were planning on visiting our volcanoes during Semana Santa.
