Renown US magazine The Atlantic published an article including 40 photographs of volcanoes around the world that had activity during this 2017.

The article titled “2017 The Year In Volcanic Activity” includes impressive photos of erupting volcanoes around the world, including the Shiveluch Volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula; Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, Indonesia; in America three volcanoes were included: Villarrica in Chile, Colima in Mexico and Turrialba in Costa Rica.

The photos included from the Turrialba Volcano included one captured on January 6 this year by Ezequiel Becerra/AFP /Getty, this was the time when a green alert was issued by the National Emergency Commission due to the ash eruptions. According to the publication, “Out of an estimated 1,500 active volcanoes, 50 or so erupt every year, spewing steam, ash, toxic gases, and lava”.

The Turrialba Volcano in Cartago, Costa Rica, is just one of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes, this year actually three of them had increased activity, aside from Turrialba, the Poas Volcano in Alajuela and the Rincon de la Vieja in Guanacaste.

The National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI), has stated that lately the seismic and volcanic activity at Turrialba is low, in December 18 at 11:33 a.m. a minor event was registered which contained small amounts of ash. “In general, relatively small amounts of ash have been expelled sporadically. The interior of the West crater continues to glimmer due to the presence of magmatic gases and rocks at high temperatures”.
