Polls leading to the Presidential Elections in Costa Rica never showed Carlos Alvarado, the candidate for Citizens’ Action Party ahead; one had Fabricio Alvarado (PRN) up by almost ten points, while another showed a statistical tie.

Today, April 1st, Carlos Alvarado was elected President of Costa Rica with 60.66% of the votes, versus 39.34% for Fabricio Alvarado.

The last survey by Opol Consultores published March 17 had Fabricio Alvarado ahead of the game by almost ten points, 36.5% vs. 27.7%; while the survey carried out by the Center for Political Studies and Investigation of the University of Costa Rica (CIEP-UCR) has presidential candidates in Costa Rica Fabricio Alvarado and Carlos Alvarado in a statistical tie.

Opol Consultores didn’t publish their last poll which was expected this past week due to threats received by some of their team members accused in social media of supporting the National Restoration Party; however, the company stated through a press release the partial results obtained in their last survey didn’t differ much from the results published March 17.

Fabricio Alvarado, and some of his supporters such as former candidates Mario Redondo and Sergio Mena stated after learning the results that they were surprised, they expected to win in a close result.
