President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, spoke today regarding the protests and acts of aggression which occurred on Saturday in San Jose against Nicaraguans in the country.

“Costa Rica is known to be a country of peace that respects the rights of others. The majority of the immigrants that arrive to Costa Rica are good people who are looking for job opportunities and different forms to contribute with the society; however, I guarantee that any person who does not fulfill this profile and represents a risk to national security or who doesn’t obey Costa Rican laws will not be allowed to enter the country or will be deported immediately”.

“Costa Rican laws must be respected, by all people and without distinction of someone’s nationality, I understand the concern of many Costa Ricans, but the best way to face these concerns is not from fear but through intelligent and balanced work. I make a call for peace, and to act with good sense, to not fall victim to provocation or hate; lets get correct information. Each person plays a fundamental role in maintaining the social peace, which as Costa Ricans we have lived by and built for decades and enjoy today. Over calls for violence or hate, good judgment, prudence, solidarity and intelligence must prevail; in this effort we need You, and every person in the country”.

“Being Tico means making peace, it means to be solidary, respectful of our neighbor. Lets honor this tradition; when facing difficult situations its together that we can move forward. Be sure that the government will continue to work always for your security”, concluded Alvarado.
