Police in Costa Rica Seized Record Number of Illegal Firearms in 2018

The police work carried out during 2018 and all the actions geared towards firearm control, allowed 2018 to be the year in which more illegal weapons were seized in the past eight years. In total, officers of Public Police Force seized 2318 weapons, which represents 13% more than the number for 2017.

Out of the total number seized, 450 were the result of the more than 60 mega-operations that were organized by the Ministry of Public Security. One of the main objectives of these operations is precisely to take out of the streets those firearms that are not duly registered or whose bearer didn’t have the corresponding permits.

Among the 2,319 firearms confiscated arr 1110 pistols, 792 revolvers and 99 rifles.

Another important data is that during 2018 the General Direction of Armory destroyed a total 3,405 weapons.

“We have come to realize with scientific and analysis evidence that firearms are very important aspect in the attainment of of murders. This is one of the strategies used to manage to reduce slightly the number of homicides was precisely to have an strict control over firearms
“, assured the Vice-Minister of Public Security, Eduardo Solano.

During this 2019 the police work will continue focusing on taking illegal weapons out of the streets, this is just one of the strategies the mega-operations strengthen public security in the different communities in our country.
