Seven robbers surprised and tied up two guards at a customs car park in Barranca, Puntarenas, and made off with four brand new autos recently imported. But they did not have it all their own way.

Despite the ease of the robbery itself in the wee hours of Monday morning, the robbers had to abandon two of the stolen vehicles, one destroyed by fire to eradicate traces–and two suspects are in custody.

One stolen car was abandoned when a front tire fell into a deep ditch and another was sighted by police Tuesday. The two suspects in the car succeeded in evading capture by running on the railroad tracks near Salinas, but decided to desert and burn the Hyundai Tucson.

The pair then took off on foot through the fields of a nearby farm while firemen unsuccessfully battled the blaze. But the gasoline tank caught and the car was a total loss.

Police later captured two suspects walking along a nearby beach. They had burns on their arms police think was caused when they set the Tucson ablaze, said Randall Picado, chief of police in Puntarenas.
