Expat and Costa Rican Model Shot and Killed in Alajuelita

A Romanian Expat by the name of Ionut-George Otelac and a Costa Rican model by name Raquel Gamboa Mora, were shot to death inside their vehicle near the Alajuelita park this Tuesday, September 10.

The two victims were aboard a Suzuki driving on the main street of the San José county of Alajuelita at noon time when two people on a motorcycle shot them.

The Romanian was 38 years-old and had a criminal record, he had been arrested in 2001 at the Juan Santamaría Airport carrying 20 kilograms of cocaine. His arrest back then led to the detention of other nine foreigners linked to a drug trafficking organization that would move cocaine from South America to Europe.

The woman was 25 years old and was a fitness model with 68 thousand followers in Instagram and 11 thousand in Facebook.

According to the Judiciary Investigative Police, to date there have been 381 victims of homicide in comparison to 415 in the same period of 2019. However, in just the last two weeks, from August 26 to September 10, there have been 43 murders. “The situation is alarming, considering the phenomenon we can see in a very short time”, commented Verónica Pérez from OIJ, who said that this situation could be explained as a result of the operations carried out against drug trafficking organizations in the past few months, since then other members of these organizations look for opportunities to position themselves higher up on the ladder.
