The 17 wind power generators along the Tacuacorí mountain in Salitral, Santa Ana have been in operation for almost four years, said Costa Rica’s National Light and Power Company (CNFL) in a press statement.

Since the start of their operations on December 13,  2012, the wind power project has generated more than 132,369 Megawatt hours of energy.

The turbines’ have a 15.3 MW capacity and power 12 thousand homes per year, offsetting a total estimated 76,225 tons of carbon dioxide since the beginning of their operation, said the CNFL press office.

“This is a calculation method that considers the thermal substitution, ie, greenhouse gas emissions avoided had the same amount of kilowatt hours been generated with a fossil fuel plant,” said Veronica Vargas, head of environmental management and natural resources for the CNFL.

The carbon offsetting by the Santa Ana wind farm has increased from 24,581.23 tons in 2013 to 27,318.73 tons in 2015, reported the CNFL.
