The lake that reappeared at the crater of the Poas Volcano in Costa Rica late January, is still somewhat superficial, but in its deepest point it reaches 15m (50 feet).

Eliecer Duarte from the Observatory of Volcanic and Seismic Activity in Costa Rica (OVSICORI), explained to national daily La Nacion, that some of the formations that had been documented just a few weeks back have now disappeared; according to him the water accumulated and the activity of this area are capable of destroying the formations.

The temperature measured reaches 54°C (129.2°F) in some areas but in others it can reach up to 97°C (206.6°F).

It was expected for the lake to form again, said the scientist, this phenomenon has occurred before. “This is an indicator of the great balance of energy, temperature and pressure, which makes us think it is possible for the volcano to enter another calm phase, such as the one it had during 60 years, before the eruptive cycle began again in April 2017”.

There are still episodes where the volcano vigorously releases gases, and at that moment a noise similar to that of the turbine of a jet can be heard. Mud and sediments are recycled and they can raise as much as 2 meters (6 feet) from their cavity, similar to a geyser.

The lake has a light blue milky color which comes from the mix of water and chemicals.

There are still no plans to reopen this National Park due to the risks still present for visitors.
