Walter Espinoza, Director of the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ), offered additional information today during a press conference regarding to the killing of a Spanish tourist in Tortuguero, Limon, Costa Rica this past Saturday.

A man identified as Albin Diaz, 33-years-old and of Nicaraguan nationality was arrested yesterday as a suspect of this crime.

According to Espinoza, the autopsy of the victim, of identity confirmed as Arantxa Lopez Gutierrez, (the name previously offered to the press was Arcanza Gutierrez) was already performed and during the same the forensic team collected body fluids that will be compared to the suspect’s DNA to determine his involvement in the murder and to confirm the suspicion and evidence of sexual assault as the mobile of the crime.

Diaz, entered the country illegally and had no ID on him at the time of his arrest; Costa Rican police are establishing communication with the Nicaraguan authorities to confirm the identity of the man and get additional information such as his criminal record.

The victim, 31-years-old, was not carrying any valuables at the time of the attack, she was walking by herself early in the morning on Saturday. She traveled from Spain with her husband and a group of 8 European tourists with the purpose of staying in Costa Rica for a 10-day period, they arrived August 1st. Her body also showed signs of strangulation.
