A shocking video, which shows a live sea turtle tied to and being dragged behind a car, sparked outrage in Costa Rica and social media on Tuesday.

 

The video is believed to have been filmed recently in Moin, Limon, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The vehicle’s license plate is clearly visible in the video, which could assist authorities in identifying the subjects in the video, though authorities have yet to speak on the matter.

 

It is not clear from the video what was the ultimate fate of the legally protected animal.

 

Moin is a preferred nesting ground for protected sea turtles.

 

Moin was also the location of the brutal murder in 2013 of Jairo Sandoval Mora, a Costa Rican environmentalist who worked to protect sea turtle eggs from poachers, an incident that made international headlines and sparked calls for better protection of environmentalists in Costa Rica and elsewhere.
