British singer-songwriter Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, known as George Michael has died at his home, his agent reported. He was 53. George Michael shot to fame in the 80’s with the duo Wham! and later continued his career as a solo artist.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist said in a statement, which continued, “The family request that their privacy is respected during this hard, emotional time. There will be no further comments at this moment”.

The famous artist sold over 100 million records throughout his career. Among the most popular songs are: Faith, One More Try, I Want Your Sex and Amazing.

As part of the duo Wham! along guitarist Andrew Ridgeley, Michael had hit songs such as: Young Guns (Go for it!), Wham Rap! and Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” which was an international million-selling single. Careless Whisper, released in 1985 was also a huge hit. Michael released his first solo album “Faith” in 1987.

His personal life was in the spotlight when he got arrested in 1998 after being caught in a “lewd act” in a public restroom at Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills.

Last month some media outlets informed he was working with producer Naughty Boy on a new album.

The pop artist had announced his retirement since 2003, but continued offering concerts and recording live sporadically.
