President of the Criminal Cassation Board and Coordinator of the Gender Commission, Costa Rican Judge Doris Arias Madrigal participated last week in the launch of the social medica campaign “Métele un gol al machismo,” promoted by the Justice and Gender Foundation of the United Nations Latin American Institute for Crime Prevention and Treatment of Offenders.
The campaign translates to “Score a Goal on Machismo,” and promotes non-violent masculinities that can lead to positive changes in cultural patterns, and equality between women and men in which both genders have a life free of violence, said the Costa Rican judiciary branch, one of the campaign’s local sponsors.
The campaign consists of 30 radio dramas, videos for broadcasting on television and social networks, posters, public awareness campaigns, as well as competitions, interactive games, and other activities.
These will be developed and disseminated over the next four years in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica and also in the African countries of Burundi and Liberia.
“It is an honor for the judiciary to celebrate the launch of this campaign, because our institution is totally committed to gender equity. For more than 12 years we have had an institutional policy that precisely seeks to equalize access to justice for people through utilizing a gender perspective,” said Judge Arias Madrigal, who also highlighted the creation of the Observatory of Gender Violence against Women and Access to Justice as one of the most important actions of the judiciary in this area.
The campaign is the result of a study carried out in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica by the Justice and Gender Foundation, with the support of the international non-profit, OXFAM, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diagnosis was based on documentary work with experts, representatives of national institutions, soccer players, sports journalists, among others.
The campaign seeks to influence men to analyze their masculinity with critical acumen and become aware of the urgency to break the circle of violence through behaviors that respect human and women’s rights.
