The labor union strike has been declared illegal so far for six different institutions; today the resolutions regarding the legality of the strikes for the Central Bank and the Social Protection Board (JPS – Institution that handles the lottery in Costa Rica) were made public.

The Labor Court of the First Judicial Circuit of San Jose, declared illegal the movement promoted by the National Association of Public Employees (ANEP) at the Central Bank under the argument that the minimum legal requirements were not met and that the options of conciliation were not exhausted.

“Even though the strike movement took place in a peaceful manner and this institution does not offer an essential service, the movement has not complied with the legal requirements such as having the minimum number of supporters, exhausting the options of conciliation, and that the movement is regulated in our legislation, for this reason it is considered illegal”, stated judge Edith Núñez Briceño.

Meanwhile, Judge Siany Barboza, also from the First Judicial Circuit of San Jose, declared the strike of employees of the Social Protection Board illegal for the same reasons described by Judge Núñez, it did not follow proper procedure and did not have the support of the minimum number of members required by law and in addition the options for conciliation were not exhausted.

There are still close to 26 pending resolutions that should be resolved during the rest of this week and next.
