Heavy rains have been affecting several communities in the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica causing floods and damages to infrastructure. More rain is expected as of this Wednesday which has led the National Emergency Commission to emit a green alert for the Pacific coast and yellow alert for the area of La Cruz in Guanacaste and North Zone.

“Atmospheric disturbances over the south of Central America and the instability of the Intertropical Converge Zone, is favoring the rain and storm since early hours in the areas of Limon, Sixaola, Los Chiles, Upala, Guatuso and La Cruz, with amounts of between 10-35mm.

It is expected that rains will continue with electric storms in the regions of the Caribbean and Northern Zone, sectors like Sixaola, Limon, Guacimo, Matina, Talamanca, Valle de la Estrella, Cahuita, Sarapiqui, Guatuso, Upala and surrounding areas can accumulate between 15-60 mm of rain. These conditions could also be reflected to the east and north of the Central Valley and sectors such as Turrialba, Cartago, San Jose and Heredia.

Strong rainfall is expected tonight in the Pacific coast, Coto Brus, Golfito, Buenos Aires, Perez Zeledon, Zona de los Santos, Quepos, Garabito, Puntarenas and the Nicoya Peninsula.

The rains have caused floods in many communities in the Caribbean as well as landslides; the North Zone has also experienced problems, specially the area of Los Chiles and Upala, causing important damages on some roads including the total collapse of a road that connects Upala with Santa Cecilia, La Cruz, Guanacaste, as can be seen in the following video shared in Facebook:
