Students at the University of Costa Rica Create Mouthwash Capable of Regenerating Tooth Enamel

Five students of the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) created an innovative product as part of their class “Innovation Management”; with the use of nanotechnology that allows the manipulation of molecular structures in very small measure, the students created a mouthwash prototype that whitens teeth while at the same time regenerating dental enamel.

“Apati-Dent” is the name given to this product, unique in the Costa Rican market, and that has nanoparticles that contain the main mineral component of teeth.

“While some of the products that are offered in the market have the characteristic of being abrasive and wearing down the enamel of the teeth with the purpose of achieving optimal whitening, Apati-Dent uses as an active ingredient the same compound from which the tooth is already made. Therefore, the tooth is not damaged in any way and instead it helps fortify it naturally”, explains the press release.

The mouthwash also serves the same purpose as all other similar products eliminating bad breath and offering a refreshing sensation.

“Some methods used these days also cause sensitivity since they require to wear down the tooth enamel to eliminate the stains. Our product instead of wearing it down, regenerates and fills in the spaces were bacteria can grow,” explained Karol Angulo, one of the members of the developing team.

Apati-Dent will allow users to achieve the whitening they want and they can continue to use it without any problems.
