Leilani McGonagle made history for Costa Rica again by winning for the first time a WQS 3000 (Women’s Qualifying Series).

McGonagle, took the first place of the WQS 3000 in Barbados with guidance from her brother and coach Noe Mar McGonagle.

The Costa Rican, a native of Pavones, Golfito, had previously won the WQS 1500 in Chile in 2017; now with this WQS 3000 win, Leilani becomes the first Tica (male or female) to every win this competition, her brother Noe Mar reached the final of this event in the past but did not get the win.

In the final, Leilani scored a 7.60 (5.17 + 2.43) enough to beat her opponent, Hawaiian Summer Macedo who scored 6.60 (3.60 + 3.00).

The Costa Rican got her best waves in the rounds leading to the final when she scored 7.6 and 8.33 for single waves. She won six rounds to reach the final, beating renown competitors such as Teresa Bonvalot from Portugal; Eva Williams from New Zealand and Hawaiian Mahina Maeda.

This win will place McGonagle in the WQS Top 20.
