Swedish tennis star Bjorn Borg is part of a generation of players who dazzled fans with not only blistering court performances but also with their off-the-court hedonism and excesses. Along with Vitas Gerulaitis, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, Borg was known as an international tennis playboy whose personal life was filled with a succession of wild parties and sexy celebrities.

Borg’s second wife Loredana Berté, an Italian beauty who started out as a glamour model before embarking on a very successful career as a pop singer, recently published a personal memoir that sheds light on her tumultuous marriage, which was apparently fueled by drugs and orgies.

Berté and Borg were married from 1989 to 1992. In that time, Berté writes, her husband was hopelessly addicted to cocaine and prostitutes. According to French website Tennis Actu, the singer’s autobiography, which is titled “Trastocando” (Upsetting) contains shocking revelations about the Swedish tennis legend.

During a trip to Milan, Borg asked Berté for five million lire (this was before the euro became fiat in Italy) to score a pack of Rohypnol, which is luridly known as a “date-rape” drug. Berté also writes that Bjorg once overdosed intentionally and had to get his stomach pumped.

Berté also explained that Borg would try to talk her into having sex with others; he wanted her to participate in orgies. He was reportedly also fond of doing cocaine and spending time with prostitutes.

According to sports news website Marca.com, which primarily covers the Real Madrid Football Club where goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Costa Rica plays, one particular cocaine and sex party arranged by Borg went too far and may have prompted Berté to seek a divorce:

“He rented out the whole second floor of a hotel to fill it with prostitutes. He personally called reception and asked them to bring him very whorish girls. It made me sick. Several of them turned up wearing fur coats and with whips in their hands. He came over to me and tried to convince me to join in.”
