Tension continue in Nicaragua where after three weeks the protests against the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.    The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) has the death toll raised to 50, however, other humanitarian organizations register as many as 63 dead.

The protests are led by the group “April 19 Student Movement” formed by university students which has also received the support of some private sectors and civil society demanding justice for the dead and the democratization of their country. On the other hand, supporters of Ortega have been gathering in the streets holding flags and supporting Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo.

The United Nations Human Rights Council requested this Friday that the authorities in Nicaragua allow them to enter the country to investigate about the deaths and violence of the protests.

“We are concerned that the situation in Nicaragua continues to be volatile. According to information received from reliable sources to date (Thursday) of at least 47 deaths – the majority of them students, 2 police agents and a journalist- have died in connection to the protests that began in mid-April”, commented Ravina Shamdasani UN Human Rights Office spokesperson.

The Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN) has urged the government to stop the repression and allow the entrance of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to investigate violent acts. The CEN has been acting as a mediator to try to promote dialogue between the parties.

In the meantime, Nicaraguans that live in Costa Rica have gathered in front of the embassy showing their support regarding the protests. Last Wednesday a group of them yelled at the ambassador of Nicaragua to Costa Rica, Duilio Hernández Avilés and his wife Ana Lillyam Yllescas, “murderers, murderers!” as they were leaving the embassy in their vehicle. The protesters had signs with slogans such as “They were students. Daniel Ortega murderer”; “SOS Free Nicaragua”; “Ortega out!” and others.
