The Costa Rican child that was found abandoned in Luckerville, Arizona in June this year, is now back with his mother thanks to the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Children’s Welfare Agency and other national and international institutions.

“Migration authorities of the United States delivered the child to his mother after spending two months in a shelter for immigrant children”, affirmed Rolando Madrigal, General Consul to Costa Rica in New York; according to Madrigal the minor is in good physical and emotional state.

“This case was the first one of this type that we had to handle, and it involved a great complexity. Fortunately, the activation of the emergency protocol allowed our representatives to give priority to the care of this child and guarantee his welfare and security”, commented Epsy Campbell, Vice-President of Costa Rica and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

During the upcoming weeks, the family will have to proceed with the migratory process that corresponds which will define if they are granted migratory status in the United States.

According to the report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, when the child was found he said he was left in that place by an uncle, who in the border told him to continue on his own and he’d be rescued at some point; the minor was carrying his birth certificate and contact numbers of his family in Costa Rica.

After being found and through the coordination of Costa Rican authorities the minor was transferred from Arizona to New York where his mother lives holding an illegal migratory status.
