Wipeout Films, the premier audiovisual production label for outdoor extreme sports and events such as surfing, stake boarding, mountain biking, body boarding, and others in Costa Rica, will be celebrating its fourth anniversary with a Surfing Awards ceremony and party at the Luxe Lounge in Escazu tonight.
The mission of Wipeout Films is to highlight Costa Rica and to promote and support extreme sports adventures all over Latin America. This film production crew is often seen at all major surf and skate events around the country. The Wipeout Films Surfing Awards is one way to recognize the contributions of athletes who promote an activity that is very important for Costa Rica. According to industry research firm Global Industry Analysts, the global surfing market will reach a value of $13.2 billion by the year 2017, and Costa Rica is well-positioned to grab a good portion of the market share.
The top award that Wipeout Films will give tonight will be Surfer of the Year. Voting for this award closed last night, and the nominees were:
- Jair Perez
- Noemar Mcgonagle
- Carlos (Cali) Munoz
- Jason Torres
- Anthony Fillingim
Wipeouts or spills in extreme sports are avoided by all practitioners, but they often look spectacular on film -particularly when the recovery is graceful. For this reason, Wipeout Films will present the Best Wipeout of 2013 to a surfer who truly deserves it. Other awards for 2013 will include:
- Best Maneuver of the Metropolitan Circuit
- Best Body Boarding Maneuver
- Biggest Wave
- Best Tube Maneuver
- Best Power Surfing Performance
- Best Aerial
The event will begin at 8:00 pm and will feature a ladies-only open bar until 10:00 pm. After that time, there will be Pilsen Frost promos of two frosty beers for 2,000 colones (about $4). For the guys, there will be a special appearance by the Wipeout Girls. Cover is 5,000 colones (about $10), and includes music by DJ Shonetto, DJ Colochos and DJ Tocuma.
