“Due to strong winds and whiteout conditions, flights at JFK have been temporarily suspended. Travelers are urged to contact their airline carriers for updates on resumption of service”, the information was posted in the different social media channels by JFK Airport, but prior to this notification, American Airlines, Delta, Avianca, among other airlines had already suspended or canceled their flights to and from New York and New Jersey.

The strong winter storm affecting the East Coast of the United States has caused the death of at least 12 people. As of last night the Kennedy Airport reported 20% of its flights being cancelled (90% of the flights to LaGuardia and 70% of the flights to Newark had been cancelled as well), but this afternoon (Thursday, January 4) the services had been temporarily suspended at both New York Airports while Newark Airport continued with limited operations.

Passengers that had a scheduled flight to any of the affected cities between today and January 6 should check with the airline. Most airlines are waiving the fees to reschedule and some are offering reimbursements.

Aside from New York and New Jersey airports, the storm has also affected operations in Boston, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Canada.

According to FlightAware 591 flights in total to or from JFK Airport were canceled; also 695 flights from LaGuardia and 1002 from Newark.
