Turrialba Volcano had a new eruption the afternoon of this Friday, May 19, breaking its period of “relative calm”.

Although both eruptions are considered small, they are a reminder of the fact that this volcano continues with high activity and precautions and security measures should be taken seriously.

The eruptions from the Turrialba volcano usually contain ash, yet, because of the rainfall that has affected the country these past few days it has not been dispersed as far as it usually does. The column reached 500 meters over the crater.

During the past 24 hours the low amplitude tremor that had been reported in the past weeks has increased to moderate and has remained continuous.

Poás Volcano in the other hand remains calm, emanating a constant column of water vapors and gases that is visible from different points of the central valley. The park remains closed to visitors for security reasons. The closure of this National Park represents a big loss of income for the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC)since it is the second most visited National Park in Costa Rica According to data provided by SINAC, the park is visited by an average 20,531 national tourists every month and 17,345 foreigners, this translates into close to $260,000.00 a month.
